I was having a conversation with an associate of mine, Steven Horowitz, about the state Japan-US business affairs as of late. Steven is a lawyer and a past Japan Exchange Teacher program (JET) member. He runs JetWit.com, a site for JET alumni to publish and promote their writings and translations, find work opportunities and to stay connected with the JET alumni community.
He was explaining that some of the companies he approached about utilizing his site to advertise and connect to potential translators and interpreters were interested but seemed unwilling to commit due to current budget constraints caused by the downturn in the economy. I told him that he should not be discouraged by this and to look at it differently. It is often times how you look at things that make the difference.
I have heard the ‘we don’t have the budget for it’ speech many times myself from clients but it only encourages me. It is when money is tight that companies are more willing to try new things.
Steve agreed that “what's going on is bad, but it's actually an opportunity.” Yes, companies are cutting budgets, but there is still a chance because they're open to more efficient and cost effective ways of doing things. If you can provide that, then they need you. They are more likely to listen to innovative ideas now that might have been considered too far out there in the past.
This is the time for U.S. and Japanese companies to look for different and creative solutions in doing business. Some past projects that I have written about in this blog depict companies that have started to do this, especially in the area of technology. With the economy being the way it is, more and more companies are going to have to as well. It is a matter of survival.
When Steven recognized that JET alumni were increasingly face tough times in terms of finding jobs, he started JetWit.com to provide a place that allows them to get exposure and also opportunities to gain experience, even if they're unemployed. Steven is giving them the opportunity to build their skills and advertise themselves in a very cost effective way.
