This is my first post of the year and I wanted to wait until after the inauguration to write in this new year. Change is here and I challenge companies in Japan-US business to really look at what that means for them. Don’t just talk, change something.
What does this mean?
1.) Be less risk averse.I had a conversation with Ken Haraguchi who writes for the Japanese newspaper, Frontline, and another colleague one night over dinner about this. Traditionally Japanese companies are especially more risk-averse but in these times, companies on both sides need to look at new ways of doing things. I maintain that it in these times when most companies are feeling the pain of this economic downturn that they will be more willing to listen to new ideas and employ new strategies.
2.) Lead more and follow less. When I started this blog, I was not sure of its tremendous potential but I created it anyway and each day in promoting it and writing, it is developing into far more than I ever expected. I am creating something that is new and unproven but I have every confidence that it will be all that I plan it to be and will be of great benefit to readers, contributors and investors in Japan -US business.
3.) Rethink. Some company at the moment is using this as their advertising slogan and it is certainly appropriate. Think, think again and rethink what you have thought and most important explore new ways of doing things. Reinvent marketing. Listen to small business owners or individuals when they come to you with a new idea. Take a chance.
4.) Create your own new frontier.I don’t usually talk politics here except in the broadest sense but this is what I believe. If Barack Obama can become president and I am not talking of race. I am speaking of how he mounted and ran his campaign, the people he surrounded himself with, his team of open-minded individuals, his use of technology, his asking people to take themselves in hand and do their part, his openness and honesty and being a part of a team that worked together with the one goal of getting him elected.
These factors won him the election. Got people of all races, ages, income brackets behind him. This was all very new and different and it worked. They did not know it would work from the beginning but they believed.
Just as I believe. I invite companies and the individuals running them and the workers working in them to open up your mind, your potential and your beliefs and do your part in creating this new world, this new frontier.
